Studio Lighting

A photographer wasn't needed for the inspiration of Studio Lighting but Sarah Bird a photographer I have looked at does portfolio natural studio lighting so I could link this in with her work and I think this shoot reflected all types of emotions such as smiling and laughter towards some sort.

We worked in groups of three with one camera and used studio lighting such as the key and fill light. In my sketch book it explains the process what we did and what setting number was the right one for the most equal perfection.

I didn't edit any of these photos as I wanted to keep them as natural as possible from the studio lighting.

Shakespear

Inspiration from Lady Clemintina was the great writer Shakespear. Looking through old plays and pieces of writing with the writing style brought back memories of how they used to dress and what photography was like back then.
When I took the mini shoot of the people during the sculptures shoot as The Albert and Victoria museam it reminded me of old-fashioned times with clothing and if you were rich and poor.
Looking back at past times, when I visited a science museam and found an old-fashioned camera and the writing which goes with it. This is what I found...

Sarah Bird 2 (Michael Robert Williams)

I liked this photo based on emotions from how plain and simple it is. Using the techniques of Michael Robert Williams having black and white statemement photos I love the lighting used in this with the shadowing. A low ISO was used as I wanted the photo to be as sharp as possible and I love the shadowing and warmth on my models neck/chest bone as it is really highlighted from the light.

The lighting used in this photo was right above my model so it highlighted her hair and I took it this angle so it didn't cause any shadows. I kept this photo non-edited because the lighting does the contrast really well from her dark eye make-up to her light blonde hair. The plain background keeps it nice and simple aswell.

Emotion and Relationships

The theme of my Human Form task is Emotion and Relationships so I will associate this by angles, colours, models, facial expressions and lots of others. I think you can relate this with so many things such as family, friends, partners and I will range this by showing different artists and inspirations for my shoots and final pieces.

Sarah Bird 1

All of these photos I took using the inspiration of colour and being quite girly and playful. I found a technique/mode on my camera which was called 'Retro' which I really liked because it got the soft, white and pretty effect. I edited some of them but not very much because it took away the 'retro' look.

This one I edited on Picnik to add to the effect of colour and girliness as it seems as a memory.

Sarah Bird does dramatic colouring and girly photos but she does do natural portfolio/studio lighting so linked in with my other shoot I think this worked really well. This is a completely un-edited photo and I love the way her skin looks and the lighting in this.

This is such a girly photo and my theme running through-out is relationships/emotion and I think this is an aspect of that as she could be on the phone to a friend or a boyfriend. The high angle is a good shot as we can see her laughter and the rule of thirds so we can see her bed-side table and that she is a normal teenage girl.

I cropped this photo because my inspiration from Sarah Bird was colour and I think this resembled it well.

I used the depth of field in this photo so focussing on my models hair and jumper so her reflection in the mirror wasn't in focus.

Solarisation - Man Ray Shoot

To achieve Solarisation what we had to do was put the negative on the special photo paper and flash it with light for one second, then put in the developer for about 1 minute, then stop for 30 seconds then leave the photo paper on the side away from all the chemicals for about 3-4 minutes after that flash it again with light for 1 second which was the 1x10 speed then put in the developer for about 1 minute and a half, then stop for 30 seconds then into the fixer for 2-3 minutes then leave in the stop again for how ever long you want it so all the chemicals have washed off the paper and it doesn't smell.

I did two shoots of Man Ray in style of ... and these are where I contrasted them a lot then turned to invert on photoshop with bypass paper. I found my second picture I took wasn't contrasted enough so it didn't work as well when I tryed out solarisation but my first photo I contrasted so much it worked well.

There were my final pieces of Solarisation which I scanned through onto the computer.

These are two photos I edited on photoshop by using a black canvas then dragging the two pictures onto the black background to get the effect of what Sam Hessamain does. I also thought my second pictures reflected his photos really well as on my research I have chosen two photos I like and one of them I think is very similar to this photo.

Lou Smith 2 (London)

I really like this photo a lot because I think it resembles Britian/London so much as even the colours of the tube represent our flag. The busy life is shown with this and I like the way the two business people are positioned as it shows the different way of relations as that is my theme. I edited it and put a dark vignette around the picture to add to the darkness and contrasted it a little bit.

This was taken at my hotel I stayed in at London where there was a golfing course. I took this quite early in the morning as we can see the sun is quite bright and all the shadowing. I love the natural effect of them walking away into the sunlight.

Lou Smith 1 (Windsor)

I chose this photo as one of my final pieces because the way the man and the sign post is positioned is perfect as even though the sign post is the centre of attention the man is used by the rule of thirds.

This photo was taken with a high ISO around 6400 to get a grain effect against the sun. I like the way the low-ish and portrait angle has worked as you can see the whole of their bodies but with everything around them. It shows Britian with culture.

I warmed the colours a bit on this photo but also because the sun was out and it was very early morning. It's not the best image I have ever taken but I like the way I have got this so natural and seeing her do a bit of photography in style with Lou Smith.

Mini sculpture shoot with Lady Clementina Hawarden

This photo is something I did when I was at the Royal Albert and Victoria museam and used a high ISO as the sun was out and I loved the way that this looked as it has such a oldfashioned style also with the people by the pond it just reminded me of being an oldfashioned part of time.

Sculptures shoot 1

These photos I thought I would add onto experimentation as I thought even though Human Form involves people I thought about taking a different approach of scultures and using a black and white effect to make it look even more old fashioned. I might edit these two on photoshop and fade them into eachother.

Lady Clementina Hawarden Shoot - Shannon Louise Nicole inspiration

I like the high angle so you can see the whole of the dress and the ladies body shape. The lighting coming through between the arms and waist gives it a nice natural effect.

I love the way this photo looks as the back and waist is so tight small then you can just see the tops of the pleats of it going out.

I love the shadowing of this photo from the light and the way I took it using the rules of thirds so you could see the buttons down her back but also on her arm and her bow.

I edited these photos using a 60's effect on picnik or a black and white effect to make it look oldfashioned.

Lou Smith

Lou Smith is a fine art painting and photography. During the weeks half term I went to London for a couple days and thought what a great way to take some pictures of human form as I wanted some pictures which didn't actually involve posing or making yourself look different. I wanted natural ones so I researched a photographer before I went and found Lou Smith as my base of what I will look like.

This photo is great as it reflects Britain in so many ways. You can tell that it's a natural shot as of the rain, umbrellas and movement, I like the landscape view as it shows all the people there and emphasis how busy and rainy it is. This photo has been taken in natural daylight so maybe a high aperture was used so it could get all the light in. I like the way the colours are all associated to Britian with red, blues but also their are different colours such as purples and oranges and the key focus when you look at this photo is the London bag which could show that it's tourists.

I really like this photo, the portrait view shows the feet but also their shadowing so a low-ish aperture might have been used so it isn't as bright and you can see the shadows. The photo was probably taken near afternoon and the effect on Photoshop of it being a bit sepia/brown effect works well. You do have to stop to take this photo to get a clear sharp photo so if I want to achieve this I will have to set myself up.

Lou Smith also sometimes takes pictures of sculputres which can link with my other shoot.

Shannon Nicole Smith

This photographer is going to be a inspiration/seperate shoot as she takes photos of engagements/weddings so this photographer could be a modernise of my shoot for Victoria and Albert museam (Lady Clementina Hawarden). Her photos are in black and white but also colour and the photos are taken in all kinds of angles which I think reflects the beauty of love.

Lady Clementina Hawarden

Again another shoot was inspired by The Albert and Victoria museam by Lady Clementina Hawarden. She was born on the 1st June 1822 so her pictures are very old fashion like such as the sepia effect so with my camera natural lighting will be used with a high ISO for a grained effect.

The oldfashioned clothing I am going to modernise by using a long dress such as a prom dress and use modern hair and makeup. But I still want the oldfashioned effect so I will edit the photo on photoshop using the brown and grain effect.

I love the natural lighting used in this image as studio light wasn't available then so for my shoot I might take the photos next/looking out through a window. I like this angle as I think using a landscape or portrait view especially on maybe the back of the model with her dress I think will look very pretty.

Sculptures

I thought I would take human form to a different level as this holiday I went to London and visted the Royal Victoria and Albert museam. They help great sculptures there of human form so I thought I would take some photos of them and use them for a shoot. I used a high ISO (about 6400) so that it got the old-fashioned effect to it as the sculptures came around from the 1500's. I might edit it through the dark room to give it that even more older effect.

Michael Roberts William (Sarah Inspiration)

Michael is a photographer I came across as he usually takes photos of fashion or music, I thought this could help with my Sarah Bird shoot as he does fashion photography with studio lighting but he does also take some photos outside with natural lighting and in black and white. This could give me a edgy effect and a little shoot I could do with then maybe editing on photoshop with a high contrast as if it is a close up photo it will darken and highlight the sharpest bits.

Sarah Bird

Sarah is a professional female photographer with over 10 years experience. She specialises in on-location and studio fashion photography, model portfolios, portrait photography (including actor/actress, author & corporate head shots), product photography, wedding & events photography.


I have noticed her photos are usually always taken in a studio so I will take my photos inside too. Colour seems to be a big importance in her pictures and she uses very bold contrasting colours or she uses colours which match. A high ISO will be used as her images are very clear and sharp and modern not old-fashioned or grainy.

This photo uses the rule of thirds which I think has a great edgy effect and the plain pink background makes the lady stand out more. I am going to link colours in my photoshoot so maybe a pink background with pink makeup or pink clothing so everything matches. Studio light has been used as we can see her shadow reflecting to the side of her, I will represent this by using different lights to cause different shadows.

This picture is such a bold eyecatching image I would like to achieve this. It stands out because of the black background and her white skin. As I don't have a studio I will take a picture of a black wall or card and then take a picture of my model and photoshop the image onto the black background. This photo has used a high ISO as it is very sharp and normal lighting has been used as there is no shadows.

Sam Hessamian

Sam Hessamian is an inspirtation I am doing for my Man Ray shoot I do in the dark room. When it comes to black-and-white fashion photograph or working in Film His black-and-white prints convey striking emotion befitting the world of fashion, from simple facial expressions to behind-the-scenes stills to lone figures amidst urban architecture. Because certain pictures he takes are taken in film it does give a grain effect so I could achieve this by setting my ISO on my digitial camera to a high number such as 6400.

I love the close up angle of this photo and being in daylight with a black and white effect it makes her makeup and hair contrast well with the white top she is wearing. I think this will be a good look for my shoot also because it's close up. I am going to do this shoot with black or red lipstick and heavy makeup in black and white so it contrasts well with the black and white. I think it will stand out well using dark room techniques. 

This photo I love because it is so sharp you can see her freckles which will react really well in the dark room especially if you take the shoot in black and white in daylight. I think I am going to take my shoot in natural daylight as it capture natural beauty and reflect natural shadows. These two photos I have chosen are quite contrasting as one has dark hair with loads of makeup and one is blonde and very simple. I think I am going to reflect these two photos and try do the same in my shoot.

Solarisation - Man Ray

Man Ray was was an American artist who spent most of his career in Paris, France. Solarisation is a phenomenon in photography in which the image recorded on a negative or on a photographic print is wholly or partially reversed in tone. Dark areas appear light or light areas appear dark. Initially, the term solarization was used to describe the effect observed in cases of extreme overexposure of the negative in the camera. Lee Miller soon became his photographic assistant, as well as his lover and muse.

These are some pictures by Man Ray which show solarisation.

This photo is something what I would like to achieve especially when gone through the dark room process. Using a black red or brown lipstick against white skin will make a good high contrast.

This photo has been solarised and the way the white effect has happened has given it an effect of an angel or some sort. It highlights her body shape against the black background and shows human form at it's finest. My shoot will be close up so I will do it on lips, eyes, facial shapes but I might do an extra shoot where it's not as close up and do it on body shape.

Irony

For my Edward Weston shoot because I was choosing abnormal pieces of fruit and vegetables it reminds me of a political writer called Jonathon Swift who used irony (saying one thing and meaning another). I thought this could link with my shoot as when you look at my photographs you think it's one thing but then you look closer and realise it's something else.

Louise Gains and Uta Barth

These are my final pieces I chose from my shoot. It was inpsired by Uta Barth with the effect of blur but I used a paint smudge stick effect on Photoshop in style of Louise Gains as she was a painter.

I have showed the before and after pictures from where i used a 'smudge stick' on photoshop.

I had to use a highish shutter speed to show the movement of the flower but I was quite lucky as it was very windy so it showed the movement. I like the way both of the colours have come across in the pictures as they're very vibrant and bold.

Radeka shoot 2 (ISO)

On this final image I choosed a high ISO so I could get the grain effect and I edited it on Picnik using a 60's effect for the curved sides and cross pikniked which gave it a bluey effect. I chucked the leaves in the air which are a lovely golden colour and you can see that they are on the floor contrasting with the green grass.

Why I like this photo is the contrast of the yellow leaves and the trunk is black. Taking it this angle worked really well as you can see all the leaves and stems from the trees but it shows the light coming through the leaves which highlight/shadow the tree more.

This photo was chosen as my idea for the the Radeka shoot was autumn. I found this tree and edited it with a 60's effect which warmed the golden and red leaves more than what they were.

Mini shoot at home (Lighting Workshop)

Before I did my Lighting Workshop at school I experimented in my bedroom when it was dark by putting some black card agaisnt a door and experimenting with light with my lamp. It was a very quick mini shoot and it wen't ok.

Radeka shoot 1 (ISO)

This was my first attempt of a Radeka shoot and I found it very difficult. I want to find some trees/leaves which are really red and golden but at this time of the year it is still very early on for them to be like that so it's quite difficult to find a place where they do it. I did find a tree with loads of crispy brown leaves and I did use quite a high ISO but these are my final images.

This one I did edit on photoshop and used a paint effect and I got this inspiration from Debi Watson who is a watercolour painter but she also has a oldfashioned effect which I think the ISO connected to.

This image is quite similiar to the one above and it hasn't been edited with a paint effect but I love the shadowing of it and how sharp the leaves look to show how crunchy they were.
